We encode the stream and send it to Streamguys (NFCB discount) who then handle the traffic. The package we have (64kbps, 22.05mhz, stereo, 60 simultaneous connections) runs us about $90 per month. Depending on the traffic you expect, you might want to look into one of the deals with a flexible cap (i.e. where you get charged for the actual number of listeners who connect, as opposed to having to choose a cap that fits your budget and/or expected usage). It seems that Live365 offers that kind of service. But, if you don't expect to have hundreds of simultaneous listeners, a similar deal to ours with StreamGuys would probably work well for you. We, too, have an old (PIII I think) machine with a good quality soundcard that runs both our stream encoder and our archiving software (Telos ProFiler). Actually, the sound card (which is quite good) comes with the ProFiler software. We changed to about 65% block programming in the mid-90s. The biggest advantage to block programming is that listeners know to tune in at a particular time of day to find the music they like. I've not heard a station play all one format on a particular day but I don't see why not...evening jazz is a great idea depending upon your market as people are more likely to be home and hanging out. But just one night a week? See my caveats below. If you are an all-volunteer announcer station and feature multiple formats the disadvantages with both our block programming and your "all day or extended day" programming are... 1. Recruitment: You not only have to find a "jazz person" when current hosts leave but you have to find a jazz person who can host at a particular time of day. 2. Best Time of Day issues: The other disadvantage to block programming is that if listeners are "jazz-heads" but are always at work (or always somewhere away from radio/stream): when your jazz music airs then they never hear the programming they like. I think the changes in the way many people listen to radio (i.e. catch it when they can...rather than sitting around the house all day listening to the radio) will make a return to "freeform" formats more attractive again for those of us who went "block". This is dependent upon what your target audience is: aging boomers? (soon to be spending MORE time at home!) or other? When WXPR came on the air in 1983, Friday night was 50's and 60's rock. Within a few years that music became a 24-hour commercial format with many iterations. So we changed to Blues. Blues Friday has now been on the air for about fifteen years. It is not everyone's cup of tea, but it has a tremendously loyal audience. By the way, Monday through Thursday evenings we have Northwoods Cafe, which is roots, AAA, some world music. I'm sure you've already thought of this, but will you run short promos encouraging people to go to your website and make donations, and run them 24/7? Will you promise to cut off a day or two of the fall fund drive if you reach a certain goal before the drive? Ginny Z. Five hours of metal, hair bands, interviews, and total insanity. The community DJ that runs it has been doing it for almost 20 years now. He knows what he's doing and I trust him completely. And if not, well, most of the insanity happens after 10pm and thus during safe harbor anyways. :-) Actually he does a pretty good job. If you're into metal, they play a lot of really good metal. And he's good about getting lots of interviews with local folks, mostly from the local roller derby and professional wrestling leagues. And if there's no interview that week, there's inevitably a cast of characters that's there to pick up the slack and inject a lot of silliness to the show. Most of those folks have been there almost as long as the main guy has. FWIW, most of our audience hates it with a passion. One of the more common refrains I hear during fundraisers is "I hate that damn metal show on Friday nights - makes my ears hurt!". But on the flip side, there's a small niche audience that LOVES it. And I don't mean "tiny" small, I mean there's probably several hundred to a few thousand listeners. I don't know if they're *donating* listeners, but it's a big enough audience that to justify me leaving well enough alone. Hell, the community DJ does manage to convince some businesses to underwrite the show now and then, which I consider a mark of skill and talent. I don't think I'd approve the show if it were starting up today; it's so wildly outside our normal format. And based on my observations I don't think there's quite the difference between Friday night and other weeknights that a lot of people think there is. On the other hand, if you are going to run programming that is specifically catering to prototypical Friday night activities (i.e. dance music for people to put on during parties) then that might work. Personally, it drives me bonkers to be driving home late and tune into a news/talk station...only to hear music. I suspect there's more people out there like that than there are fans of a given genre of music, but everyone's audience/region/listenership is different. -------------------------------------------------- Aaron Read WEOS & WHWS-LP General Manager read at hws.edu NPR 89.7FM & HWS 105.7FM (315)781-3811 Hobart & William Smith Colleges Geneva, NY 14456 > > On Fri, 21 Aug 2009 10:20:04 -0400, Graham Rice/WJFF wrote > > We're often encouraged to program across the week in bands of similar > > programming at the same times each day.
