[NFCB] help on volunteer policy on former felons

We just signed on a overnight programmer who's out after a 20+ year
sentence.  So far, no problems.  We've notified the programmers on either
side of his shift because we think they have a right to know and also so
they can contact us if they see or suspect any kind of problem.  We also
have a convicted sex offender programmer who's very reliable and doing a
good job.    

We do have certain security precautions in place to protect all of our
programmers and we don't hesitate to terminate anyone who causes problems.
Like the long-time programmer who stole our best blues CDs, sold them to a
local store, lied to us about it, and then asked for his show back because
he'd "been to court and paid the fine."  We don't do formal background
checks at this time -- but Lincoln isn't all that big and we know, or know
somebody who knows, most of the people who volunteer.
 
I'm more concerned about the programmers and volunteers with unaddressed
mental health problems.   

FYI:  We've discovered that we have a very loyal listener base in the local
prison populations.

Hi folks,

Perhaps you have dealt with this before, but we've got a new  
volunteer who's still on parole from his 3rd degree manslaughter  
felony. He's actually a really nice older guy, but some of our staff  
are understandably concerned.

Can any of you share your policy on how you treat volunteers who are  
former felons.

Also, what about background checks? Do you do those as a matter of  
course?
