The first was the Reform Immigration for America Campaign Summit, which took place in June. The event brought together more than 400 advocates from across the country, all united around the goal of advancing comprehensive immigration reform. For me, this event was special, because it gave me the opportunity to meet with many of the spirited and dedicated advocates who are championing this cause at the local level and allowed me to see myself as a member of this broad community of advocates. The second major event was the national DREAM Act graduation in Washington, DC. The graduation ceremony also took place in June, and I helped coordinate the event as a member of the planning committee. I was charged with the task of coordinating legislative visits on Capitol Hill for individuals and groups attending the graduation. The scene of more than 500 students and their allies standing in front of the Capitol building was bittersweet. The youth in attendance were there to support the DREAM Act, a law that would establish a path to legal status and citizenship for undocumented immigrant students. The event reminded me of the challenges confronted by immigrant students who are living with the realities of our broken immigration system every day and helped me understand the role of advocacy and public service in broader social justice efforts. Christina Hisel For five months, I worked on the Social Innovations team at Mercy Corps under the supervision of David Lehr and mentorship of Karen Doyle Grossman as an Assistant Program Manager. I conducted an internal and external scan of high-impact, financially sustainable programs to alleviate poverty across a wide number of geographies. I have supplemented these activities with other projects such as: grant writing for a youth entrepreneur program, concept paper development for a post-disaster fund, marketing support for Mercy Corps, social innovation strategic planning, business plan support for rural pharmacies in Guatemala, and authored an introductory paper on the role of technology in international development. I also had the privilege of working from the headquarters in Portland, OR and the advocacy office in Washington DC. Due to the fellowship, I was allowed to sit in on senior leadership meetings hosted by the President and CEO of Mercy Corps and aided their work on development theory and fragile states indexes. From the DC office, I attended presentations by Indonesia field staff at UNAIDS, participated in meetings with corporate partners, and met with the Syria field staff and Committee of Foreign Affairs staff to discuss the status of Iraqi refugees. In the Central African Republic, I worked under the supervision of Allison Huggins, a Mercy Corps CAR program manager and alongside a team of local staff in order to help promote awareness of women?s rights through the development of a multi-media campaign and radio drama. I hosted and conducted focus groups in villages and cities to determine men and women?s attitudes and experiences toward violence against women. With the research findings and baseline survey results, I developed the behavior-change messaging for the women?s rights campaign and a 20-episode educational radio drama and listening guides for community organizations for each episode. I also had the honor of attending a speech by the President of CAR and hearing President Obama speak from Ghana at the US Embassy alongside hundreds of Central Africans. Sasha Pippenger She spent her placement at the International Rescue Committee?s (IRC) Washington, DC headquarters where she worked on legislative and policy advocacy pertaining to the Asia regional portfolio. During her fellowship tenure, she was deployed to Pakistan for three months to support IRC?s response to the deepening humanitarian crisis. She worked in coordination with UN agencies and other partners to advance services for the three million Pakistanis who were displaced from their homes as a result of on-going conflict with the Taliban. While in Asia, Sasha also traveled with her Gardner mentor, IRC Vice President Anne Richard, and other dignitaries on a delegation to Japan, China, Thailand, Indonesia, and Afghanistan. She has stayed on with IRC, and is now serving as the Advocacy Officer in Islamabad, Pakistan.
