POSITION: DIRECTOR
CATHOLIC INSTITUTE FOR LASALLIAN SOCIAL ACTION
     RESPONSIBILITIES:  
Saint Mary's College of California seeks an 
inspired national leader to carry the Catholic 
Institute for Lasallian Social Action (CILSA) 
into its next phase of development and work with 
senior leaders of the College to promote the 
liberal arts, Lasallian, and Catholic mission of 
the College.
Saint Mary's College nestled in the Moraga 
Valley, east of Oakland in the greater San 
Francisco Bay Area, is one of the most respected 
Catholic, Lasallian and Liberal Arts institutions 
in the Country. As a comprehensive and

CILSA is a highly visible campus-wide 
organization that involves more than 1,000 
students each year in academic and co-curricular 
social justice and action programs. The Institute 
occupies a unique position within the College as 
a unit with both significant Academic and Student 
Life components. CILSA serves as a hub for 
connecting Saint Mary's with the outside 
community and for coordinating and developing 
social justice, service-learning and community 
engagement opportunities.
Established in 1999, the mission of CILSA is to 
promote a culture of service as a means of 
embodying the values of faith, justice, and 
charity. The Institute seeks to engage all 
members of the campus community in activities 
that respond directly to community needs, that 
develop a deep personal, intellectual, and 
spiritual understanding of social justice issues, 
and that inspire a life-long commitment to 
service. In order to achieve this goal, CILSA 
offers a continuum of programs and services, 
including: service immersion and leadership 
development programs, assistance with an 
institutional social justice speaker series, 
faculty and staff development, co-curricular and 
course-based social action opportunities, and a 
social action clearinghouse (For additional

Reporting directly to the Vice Provost for 
Academic Affairs, the Director of CILSA in 
collaboration with the Vice Provost for Academic 
Affairs, the Vice Provost for Student Life and 
the Social Justice Coordinating Committee, 
provides strategic and operational leadership, 
vision and direction for developing a 
comprehensive social justice/civic engagement 
agenda that ensures that such commitments are 
defining components of every undergraduate 
student's educational experience.

 Collaborate with senior leadership at Saint 
Mary's to deepen campus-wide understanding and 
practice of service-learning and to develop 
social justice and action programs that link both 
Academic and Student life.

 Inspire, motivate and supervise CILSA staff (6) 
to carry out the Institute's mission, to meet its 
annually developed strategic goals, and to work 
collaboratively across all the Institute's 
constituencies to achieve CILSA's highest 
potential.

 Take current service-learning programs to a 
higher level by providing leadership, 
organization, and management skills to strengthen 
coordination across all service-learning efforts 
campus-wide in order to improve the quality of 
both the "service" and "learning" dimensions of 
service-learning.

 Conduct professional development workshops and 
coordinate professional development activity 
(e.g. January Term Faculty Fellows program, 
Social Justice Institutes for faculty in the 
Justice and Community Minor). Collaborate with 
faculty, staff, students and community partners 
in developing and refining service-based 
approaches to teaching and learning.

 Assist faculty in integrating community-based 
learning components (service-learning, 
community-based research, social justice field 
experiences) into their courses and collaborate 
with deans, department chairs, and faculty to 
build alignment between service and academic 
instruction and research across the curriculum.

 In collaboration with the Social Justice 
Coordinating Committee, develop a "next stage" 
vision, goal-setting and strategic plan for 
institutionalizing service on behalf of social 
justice at Saint Mary's College; establish 
assessment criteria for the service-learning 
experiences throughout the college; and develop 
and implement a college-wide approach to the 
service-learning designation process.

 Direct the external CILSA Development Board and 
in collaboration with the Board, the Vice Provost 
for Academic Affairs and the Saint Mary's 
Development Office, identify funding resource 
needs in the service-learning area, seek funds to 
augment and expand service-learning initiatives, 
and secure funding from public/private sources to 
support the advancement of campus-community 
engagement.

 Serve on college committees (Campus Deans and 
Directors, Justice and Community Minor Advisory 
Board, Social Justice Coordinating Committee, 
Cummins Institute for Catholic Thought, Culture, 
and Action and the Henning Institute Advisory 
Board).

 Represent Saint Mary's to local and extended 
academic and related communities of interest.

 The successful candidate will be expected to 
contribute to the mission of the College which is 
informed, animated and expressed through its 
Catholic, Lasallian and Liberal Arts traditions.
     QUALIFICATIONS:  

 Minimum seven (7) years professional experience 
with the theory and practice of service-learning 
and the equivalent of five (5) years progressive 
responsibility and professional administrative 
and supervisory experience in a public or private 
four-year college or university; Master's degree 
in relevant field is required and earned 
doctorate highly desired.

 An understanding of and commitment to the 
liberal arts, Lasallian and Catholic mission of 
Saint Mary's College, particularly with 
demonstrated experience with Catholic Social 
Thought and its manifestation in Catholic higher 
education.

 Demonstrated national leadership in the area of social justice education.

 Developed, mature and accomplished leadership 
experience with a compelling presence, a passion 
for service on behalf of social justice, and a 
deep understanding of the role college students, 
staff, and faculty can play in serving the common 
good.

 Demonstrated superior skill in collaborating 
with a variety of diverse College and community 
constituencies.

 Demonstrated ability to develop credibility and 
work effectively in a leadership capacity among 
faculty, students and staff in a higher education 
setting and, equally, to be professional and 
collegial and work effectively with a diversity 
of community groups; ability to articulate to a 
variety of constituencies and audiences the 
implications of diversity and multiculturalism to 
issues of public/community service and 
service-learning theory and practice.

 Ability to engage faculty in the pedagogy of 
service-learning; experience in designing, 
implementing and teaching college-level 
service-learning courses highly desired.

 Demonstrated effectiveness in campus 
leadership, including the ability to inspire and 
coach others to achieve shared goals, to 
communicate the big picture, to mobilize support 
of a variety of constituencies to attain it, to 
model both teamwork and independent judgment, and 
to model the courage to take risks.

 Demonstrated administrative effectiveness, 
including the ability to negotiate complex 
bureaucracies and administrative systems to 
achieve goals, to organize and manage time 
effectively under tight deadlines and changing 
priorities, to juggle several projects and tasks 
simultaneously, and to work well under pressure.

 Significant successful management experience, 
including: staff recruitment, development, 
supervision and management; program planning, 
design, implementation and evaluation; 
familiarity with budgeting and funding processes 
relevant to this position.

 A proven track record of fundraising and 
stewardship, or demonstrated interest and 
capacity to identify and cultivate significant 
resources for organizational growth.

Reporting to the Director of CILSA, the Community 
Partnerships Coordinator serves as CILSA's 
primary representative in the community, 
introducing community organizations to the 
processes for building service-learning 
partnerships with Saint Mary's faculty, staff and 
students; strengthens existing partnerships and 
cultivates additional relationships between Saint 
Mary's and community organizations and government 
agencies; expands and maintains a community 
partner database; works with faculty across the 
disciplines in designing and implementing 
course-based social action projects and 
coordinates placements of students (approximately 
500 students/year) at community partnerships for 
the College's service-learning courses; develops 
an ongoing assessment program for 
service-learning courses including the collection 
of data related to student involvement in 
service-learning courses; develops and maintains 
a master list and syllabi of social justice and 
service-learning courses and faculty interested 
in community service and service-learning; serves 
as the main conduit of community service-related 
information for Saint Mary's faculty, staff and 
students, informing the campus of relevant 
community initiatives and programs; coordinates 
the ongoing development of the CILSA 
information/resource office, including data entry 
and management of the community service database; 
works in collaboration with the Office Manager.
Serves as the first point of contact, intake, 
information and referral for all who come to the 
information/resource center (e.g., students, 
faculty, staff, community partners, and visitors 
to Saint Mary's College); advises students who 
need additional assistance related to their 
service-learning experience, including academic 
advising, trouble shooting logistical issues of 
scheduling/timing/transportation; updates and 
maintains CILSA's service-learning Web page, 
hires and supervises student workers to implement 
a system of placement support for academic-based 
social action; ensures full coverage of business 
hours (9 a.m.-5 p.m.) to assist those who visit 
or phone the CILSA information/resource office. 
Other duties as assigned. The successful 
candidate will be expected to contribute to the 
mission of the College, which is informed, 
animated and expressed through its Catholic, 
Lasallian and Liberal Arts traditions.
     QUALIFICATIONS:  
Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree 
highly desirable. Demonstrated ability to address 
the essential functions associated with this 
position, including the knowledge and abilities 
identified above; knowledge of Bay area community 
organizations and social service agencies; 
significant personal or professional experience 
with community-based organizations; demonstrated 
ability to develop reciprocal, service-learning 
partnerships between higher education 
institutions and diverse community groups; deep 
commitment to helping students realize their full 
potential academically, personally, and 
spiritually; demonstrated ability to work with 
college students in mentoring relationship, 
developing leadership skills and responding to 
their interest, concerns, and challenges in 
regard to service on behalf of social justice; 
professionalism, ability to maintain 
confidentiality, tact, discretion, and an 
attitude of service to others; enjoyment working 
with others in a team-like, cooperative, 
collegial environment.
Ability to communicate effectively with students 
and colleagues with diverse cultural backgrounds; 
excellent organizational, oral and written 
communication skills; ability to organize and 
prioritize multiple tasks, and complete 
assignments in a through, accurate and timely 
manner that achieves expected outcomes; ability 
to work irregular hours, which includes evenings 
and weekends; proficiency in Microsoft Word and 
Excel; skilled at developing and utilizing data 
bases; proficiency with web page development and 
maintenance; understanding and familiarity with 
the tradition of Catholic Social Thought and of 
the De La Salle Christian Brothers, highly 
desirable.
