REPORTS TO: Director of Major Gifts
DESCRIPTION:
Mills College is a nationally respected independent liberal arts 
college for women with graduate programs for both women and men. 
Located on 135 lush acres in the foothills of Oakland, California, 
the College enrolls approximately 900 undergraduate women and 500 
graduate women and men. Mills is consistently ranked one of the 
top 100 liberal arts colleges in the nation by U.S. News & World 
Report, which also recognizes the College as one of the top 20 most 
diverse liberal arts institutions in the country.
The Office of Institutional Advancement (OIA) is responsible for the 
identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors 
that support the strategic initiatives of Mills College. The 
strategic initiatives include supporting student scholarships, 
maintaining preeminence in the arts, encouraging leadership for women 
in the professions, as well as advancing women in science, technology 
and research. OIA consists of individual giving programs such as 
annual, major, and planned gifts as well as foundation and corporate 
giving. Gift processing and donor relations are also a part of OIA.
The College is recruiting for an Associate Director of Major Gifts to:
Identify, manage, cultivate and solicit prospective donors throughout 
the United States, focusing on large gifts of $25,000 or more; 
prepare written proposals; assist volunteer solicitors and provide 
for proper linkage of donor interests with College funding needs. 
Travel required to visit donors in their cities.
The primary responsibilities of the Associate Director of Major Gifts 
include the following:
	*	Manage solicitation of assigned individual donors.
	*	Develop plans for cultivation of potential donors.
	*	Develop and manage volunteers.
	*	Personally solicit gifts from donors.
	*	Create and maintain contact between prospects and the College.
	*	Create opportunities for donor and College 
interaction by planning College gatherings in communities where donor 
potential exists.
	*	Prepare formal proposals attempting to match donor 
interests with College financial needs.
	*	Write copy for fundraising brochures, event materials 
and stewardship reports.
	*	Assess and develop major gift giving potential in 
assigned regions.
	*	Meet with other staff regarding research and strategy 
development.
	*	Research potential donors' interests and background.
	*	Prepare proper recognition for major donors and 
coordinate stewardship events and materials.
	*	Solicit planned gifts and facilitate contact between 
donor and planned giving consultant when needed.
	*	Perform related duties as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
	*	Bachelor's degree and demonstrated initiative and 
achievement in fundraising or comparable skills.
	*	Minimum of three (3) years' experience in 
development/advancement work as a fundraiser.
	*	Experience in personal solicitation and making 
initial contacts with new prospects preferred and/or proven ability 
to make effective presentations on behalf of Mills.
	*	Ability to strategize large gift solicitations, 
analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
	*	Ability to use volunteers effectively.
	*	Commitment to women's education.
	*	Capable and productive writer.
	*	Excellent organizational, analytical and 
interpersonal communication skills.
	*	Willingness to travel extensively and use of personal vehicle.
	*	Valid California driver's license, proof of current 
auto insurance, and a safe driving record.
	*	Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
	*	Basic fundraising principles, practices, and techniques.
	*	Knowledge of word processing and database systems 
used in fundraising; SCT Banner very helpful.
	*	Ability to work cooperatively with others and 
maintain effective customer service towards all persons contacted 
during the course of job performance.
	*	Ability to establish and maintain effective and 
productive working relationships within a diverse and multicultural 
environment.
	*	Ability to comply with the College's Injury and 
Illness Prevention Program.
SALARY:
Competitive salary commensurate with experience, plus an excellent 
benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD 
insurance/403(b) retirement plan, 22 vacation days, plus 13 paid 
holidays and 12 sick days annually. Staff also receives free 
admission to campus events, use of the pool, fitness center, and 
tennis courts. Tuition remission is also available after an 
introductory period.
