City Council Member Gale A. Brewer (D-Manhattan), representing the
Upper West Side and Clinton communities, is seeking a full-time
Deputy Director to work in her City Hall Legislative Office. The
successful candidate will work closely with the Council Member, the
Legislative Director, the Director of Constituent & Intergovernmental
Affairs and report directly to the Chief of Staff.
Candidates should be energetic, be able to work collaboratively, and
innovatively, and implement a shared vision of progressive policies.
Prospective staff members must be committed to seeking out new and
better ways for the office to connect with, and deliver for, the
Council Member's diverse constituents and various city agencies.
Candidates should also be particularly interested in managing the
internal workings of a political office and serving as a personal
assistant to an elected official.
Prospective candidates will be responsible for all aspects of
scheduling for the Council Member and managing the City Hall office,
tasks including but not limited to: responding to invitations,
scheduling meetings, planning special events, tracking the Council's
hearing schedule as well as Community Board and political club
meetings, attending events on behalf of the Council Member,
supervising interns, and drafting correspondence and press releases.
The Deputy Director is also responsible for communicating with other
staff members to ensure that the Council Member is prepared for
upcoming meetings and events.
This individual will also serve as the Executive Producer for Council
Member Brewer's public access television show, "This Side of Central
Park" which airs on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network channel (no
previous television experience is required). Finally, although not
required, dependent upon the candidate's personal interests she or he
will have the opportunity to engage in other aspects of the office's
work from legislative affairs to constituent services.
Candidates should possess excellent written and oral communication
skills. They should also be organized, flexible, and experienced at
multi-tasking. Successful candidates will be self-motivated team
players who excel at working in a fast-paced environment. Although
not required, preference will be given to candidates interested in
gaining a deeper knowledge of New York City government and politics.
