[Jgfamembers] Update on Board/ Officers Meeting

To the JGFA Community:

The intent of this email is to update you on our first Board of Directors 
and Officers Meeting on September 16 in San Francisco and as always to 
enlist your help in our ongoing activities

Overall the Board/ Officers meeting was a tremendous success.  The Board 
consisting of Mike Heyman, Don Kennedy, Francesca Gardner, Kathleen 
Abernethy and Jeanne Halleck, was engaged and excited about moving forward 
the mission of the organization (summary of their bios enclosed). They 
advised on the mandate of JGFA activities, provided their perspective and 
wisdom, and had an opportunity to understand the range of activities that 
have been accomplished.  The major outcomes of the meeting were:

Focus for Officers in 2006-07:
1. Mandate for Renewal (Janet L.)
- Coordinate National Retreat – Spring 2008, with Major Planning in 2007

2. JGFA Fundraising (Jerry) 
- Close out for the year outstanding contributions through emails and 
links to website
- Target fall 2007 for a fresh round of fundraising campaign 

3. Service Outreach (Linda) 
- Spring/Summer 2007 -- annual regional public service events
- Involve Francesca Gardner
- For consideration: Issue-based service program, or select one 
organization that we want to sponsor.  Maybe organizations that have 
hosted fellows

4. Communication Plan (Sean, Carole)
- Develop Plan – Fall 2006, and Implement –  Calendar year 2007 
- Potential Ideas:
        - Quarterly conference call with broader JGFA set, get 
inspirational people on the call; perhaps conduct as netmeeting with 
speakers
        - Quarterly communication with a clear value statement of what the 
JGFA offers to the fellows. 
        - Can we make the website more of a user-community? 

5. Establish Next Generation of JGFA Leaders (Waseem)

Focus for the Board in 2006-07:
1. Establish Mentor Alumni Program (Kathleen, Carole and to bring in Jerry 
Ingersoll)
2. Determine University Commitment to JGFA, e.g. funding, resources 
(Heyman, Kennedy)
3. Attend regional informal events for Board to meet broader JGFA 
community (All)

A powerpoint presentation of the materials, a summary of the backgrounds 
of the Board members and the agenda for the meeting is enclosed.   In 
addition, an editorial written by Don Kennedy in memoriam of John Gardner 
for Science magazine is enclosed.

As always, we need your help to make all these projects successful.  Even 
if you only have an hour a month to help, that would help us move forward. 
 So please contact any of the officers or myself if you would like to get 
involved.
