We recently received a double dose of good news. The California Arts Council
<http://stanfordjazzworkshop.cmail19.com/t/r-l-yuuihrdy-nhlbbur-jt/>
awarded us $16,200 -- our first-ever major grant from the state -- and the
the National Endowment for the Arts
<http://stanfordjazzworkshop.cmail19.com/t/r-l-yuuihrdy-nhlbbur-ji/>
approved us for a grant of $10,000. These funds will support our
after-school programs for middle and high school students, as well as our

SJW offers a six-day-long intensive interaction with jazz legends, top
professionals, gifted educators, and motivated students from around the
world for adults over 18. Running from July 30 to August 4, students choose
their own classes from a curriculum that focuses on improvisation and
includes small ensemble playing and masterclasses, as well as classes in a
variety of topics such as theory, musicianship, arranging, Afro-Latin jazz,
and more.
Unique to the Jazz Institute are the special presentations given by artist
faculty on topics in which they specialize or have particular experience.
Admission to nightly Stanford Jazz Festival performances is included, and
there are several jam sessions each evening.

<http://stanfordjazzworkshop.cmail19.com/t/r-l-yuuihrdy-nhlbbur-ju/>

Pianist Shai Maestro began his professional career at the top, as a member
of Avashai Cohen’s band, and has since logged countless performances around
the world as a sideman and more recently as the leader of his own trio.
At this special free presentation, made possible with funding by the
Western States Arts Federation and the National Endowment for the Arts,
Shai will demonstrate and talk about a variety of jazz topics. Shai will be
joined by bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Ziv Ravitz, and together, the
trio will demonstrate and discuss their many influences, from Middle
Eastern and Latin American traditions to forward-thinking jazz. A limited
number of participants will be selected to perform for the trio.
All this happens on July 9th at 3 pm in Campbell Recital Hall on the
Stanford campus.
